„Explaining Inequality, its Causes and Consequences: Analytical Advances and Remaining Challenges“

Place: Graz University, RESOWI-Center, room SZ 15.22, tract G, 2nd floor

Time: September 1-2, 2017

To stop and reverse increasing inequality is the challenge of the beginning 21st century. Social coherence is tested in almost all OECD countries. Large groups of the societies do not participate in income growth of the economies. While real income has grown between one and two percent annually on average, the lower deciles of the income distribution have experienced real income losses over decades. The prospects that they can improve their situation by working has been lost for wide parts of the population.

We will discuss challenges and research lines related to the change in the income distribution in three different but interrelated fields: technological change, climate change and environment protection and international trade. Technological changes and international trade have been in the focus of inequality research for at least three decades, when „Trade and Wages“ have been debated in reflection of diverging wage growth in the USA since the 1980s. Environmental policies affect the debate on the income distribution in two ways: first, the ecological footprint is income dependent and, second the policies to reduce effects on climate and environment are not income neutral either, putting a proportionally higher burden to low income households.

We will discuss theoretical and empirical contributions and debate on implications for economic policy on the two days in September.
